10 More of the Funniest Sporting Moments from across the globe!

We recently shared 10 hilarious sporting moments from around the world. Moments of pure comedic genius, mostly at the expense of a player or team who suffers an often embarrassing misfortune!

Well, guess what? We’ve dug up 10 more of the funniest moments from sports to brighten up your day  – unless of course, they involve your favourite team or one of your sporting idols.

10 funny sporting moments to watch and enjoy

1. Shaq jumping into the crowd

Shaq is one of the biggest and heaviest basketball stars to ever grace the game. He was an absolute unit in his day, dominating the court with his physical presence and rough style of play. He stands at around 2.16m and weighs almost 150kg.

Now imagine sitting on courtside seats at a Lakers game and seeing Shaq charging at you as he chases after a loose ball, only to realize he isn’t going to be able to stop himself in time, so he has no choice but to try and jump over you. Yeah, not a good situation.

Believe it or not, this happened many times throughout Shaq’s career, and each one of them is just as funny/terrifying as the last. However, the best one has to be when Shaq was playing for the Phoenix Suns. He chases after a loose ball and sprints towards the bench, but this time, everyone in the area bails out of the way as if a double-decker bus was headed towards them.

2.Woody Austin takes a dip into the water on the 14th

During the 2007 Presidents Cup, Woody Austin made the unfortunate mishap of falling into the water after attempting to rescue a ball that was submerged a good few inches below the water.

It was an audacious attempt to dig the ball out from that deep, but God loves a trier.
In the clip, he takes a mighty swing and catches absolutely none of the ball, losing his footing in the process. He then falls back into the water in a hilarious fashion. He is clearly trying to stop himself but can’t seem to quite manage it. Eventually, he gives up and almost completely submerges himself in the water, ending up face down in the lake. Absolute comedy gold!

Even Tiger Woods found the situation hilarious as he watches on from dry land.

3. Chaotic stretcher fail in Greece

Player injuries are no joke, but this sequence from a Greek football match looks like something straight off a comedy sketch. Seriously, it’s too crazy to believe it’s actually a real match.

As a player from the away team is down injured, two medics run over to stretcher the player off the field. From the very moment they arrive, you can already tell it’s not going to be a pleasant experience for the downed player.

The first medic arrives at the scene with a stretcher that looks more like an umbrella, throws it to the ground angrily, and then grabs the injured players’ legs. It all seems extremely haphazard and rushed without much care given for the athlete.

Next, the medics grab the player, who has now managed to get himself to his knees and is thrown down onto the stretcher against his will. The two on-field medics pick the stretcher up and attempt to sprint off the field, but one of them loses his footing and falls flat on the floor, dropping the stretcher and the player in the process.

After another slip and a few more stumbles, they finally get the player off the field, but rather than place him down gently, they throw him down in a heap on the floor. Crazy scenes!

It’s hilarious to watch, but you have to wonder what on earth is going on here for the medics to make such a hash of their one and only job.

4.  2008 Memorial Cup trophy fail

If you aren’t familiar with the Memorial Cup, just know that it’s often regarded as one of the hardest trophies to win in sports. How so? Well, first of all, there are 60 teams involved, and the age limit of the players is between 16-21, which makes it a pretty exclusive club.

With that in mind, imagine the horror of the die-hard Spokane Chiefs’ fans watching on while their captain Chris Bruton drops and breaks the prestigious trophy right before their very eyes. Cringe!

After a hard-fought campaign, the fans finally got to celebrate as their team finally lifted the trophy. However, as the captain tried to pass it to his teammates, the trophy fell apart into pieces and scattered all over the ice. Talk about cheap craftsmanship.

While it seems like Bruton wasn’t at fault for the blunder, the crowd jeered and booed the team as it looked to be a sign of disrespect. After all, the trophy they had just won was now in bits on the floor. Not exactly the best look!

To make the most of a bad situation, the team passed parts of the broken trophy between themselves and lifted it over their heads to the crowd in a kind of tongue in cheek celebration.

5. Tennis ball boy faceplants the wall

We never like to see ball boys get hurt during a game, but this one is just too funny to emit from our list.

In a clay court tennis match between Gabashvili and Almagro, a young ball boy hurries to collect a discarded ball from Almagro. As he sprints to return to the back of the court, he trips and loses his footing. This sends him flying face forward into the advertising boards and makes an almighty bang in a moment of deafening silence, scaring both the players and the fans.

To make the situation even more hilarious, the kid plays it off as if nothing had happened as Almagro turns around to see what all the fuss is about. A classic tennis blooper!

6. Rugby fan drops two beers as he takes a ball to the head

Sometimes, you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s exactly what happened to this unfortunate fan during the Harlequins Aviva Premiership match against Saracens as he took a rugby ball to the head while walking back to his seat with two pints of beer in hand.

He steps out of the tunnel with a big smile on his face, clearly proud of the two pints he has just bought and can’t wait to bring one to his friend so he can sit and enjoy the rest of the match. But as soon as he comes out of the tunnel, the ball (which had soared a good 50 yards) smacks him clean on the top of his head, and he drops to the floor, taking the two pints of beer with him.

Fortunately, the legend gets himself up with a big smile on his face and seems to have found the whole situation just as hilarious as everyone else did. Get the man some free beers!

7. Zinedine Zidane’s crazy World Cup Final

Without a doubt, the 2006 World Cup Final goes down as one of the most insane finals of all time thanks to Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane, who some people argue is the greatest player of all time, was playing his final game for France. He was their talismanic captain leading his team in the biggest final in world football, in what was to be his fairy tale swan song. The stage was set for a dramatic and memorable exit, and my word, he didn’t disappoint.

Zidane started the game with his usual swagger and flair. Amazing first touches, crisp, smooth passing, and fantastic positional play. When France was awarded a penalty, there was only one man to step up to the plate. Zidane pulled off an audacious chip from the penalty spot that just clipped the underside of the crossbar and landed just a few inches over the line. It was about as perfect as it gets.

However, he soon went from hero to zero as he committed one of the most bizarre acts on a football field the world has ever seen. In extra time, and the score locked at 1-1, Italy’s Marco Materazzi allegedly shouted some slurs to Zidane about his sister. Ater than brushing it off as normal banter between players, Zidane turned to the Italian defender and fired an almighty headbutt into his chest, knocking him off his feet. An utterly hilarious moment for all neutral fans watching on.

The referee immediately sent Zidane off the field, and France went on to lose the game. An unceremonious exit for the legend, but one we won’t be forgetting any time soon.

8. Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki

The highly anticipated exhibition match between Muhammad Ali vs. Antonio Inoki (labelled as the War of the Worlds) turned out to be one of the strangest/funniest spectacles in combat sports.

Ali, as most of you are already aware, was one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, while Inoki was a professional wrestler and mixed martial artist. The two agreed to fight, but under unique rules that they would create for the sake of this one match. At the time, Ali was the reigning WBC/WBA heavyweight boxing champion, so it’s not like this was some cash grab after his retirement.

It’s better if you just watch the fight, but in summary, Inoki spent most of the time on his back, throwing kicks at Ali like a child throwing some sort of tantrum. In fact, he kicked Ali’s legs 107 times during the match, which is a pretty crazy statistic in itself.

The rules favoured Ali heavily as Inoki was not allowed to throw, grapple, or tackle. He was only permitted to kick if at least one knee was on the mat, which is what led to his hilarious tactic. Definitely not one of the best fights in history, but one of the funniest for sure.

9. Umpire Peter Carey marks the ball

For referees and umpires, it must be extremely difficult to resist the urge to throw in a tackle or volley the ball every once in a while. After all, umpires and refs are usually players themselves, so they must be dying to get involved in the action.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what legendary umpire Umpire Peter Carey did in the 1999 clash between Fremantle and St Kilda at Subiaco Oval. The ball was drop kicked right in his direction, but rather than move out the way, his natural instinct as a player kicked in, and he marked the ball in absolutely perfect fashion, jumping as he caught the ball and almost looked ready to handball it off to the player next to him. What a legend!

The best part is a Saints player rushed Carey and almost tackled him, realizing at the last second that he isn’t actually a player. It seems like everyone forgot what was going on for a few moments!

10. Tomislav Piplica heads the ball into his own net

Tomislav Piplica was a Bosnian-Herzegovinian football player who spent most of his playing days in the German Bundesliga. In the 2000/2001 season, Piplica’s Energie Cottbus were playing Borussia Mönchengladbach, in a match that bore witness to one of the strangest own goals ever.

An opposing player hits a deflected shot at goal that gets skied into the air, and its trajectory is sending it straight towards Piplica’s net. Instead of simply reaching his arms out in the air, he seems to freeze, or maybe he loses sight of the ball, who knows? Anyway, instead of watching it, he stands still, and the ball lands right on his head and ricochets off into his own goal. He then attempts a comical backward dive to try and rescue the situation, but it’s all just too little too late.

There’s a hilarious interview where Piplica is being questioned over the incident, but while he is giving his answer, his young daughter is innocently eating ice cream as she looks at the camera and pats her own head, then pointing at her father. You know it’s bad when you’re being mocked by your own children.
