10 Funny Sporting Moments!

Let’s be honest. Any real sports fan knows just how much supporting a team puts you through the motions. One moment you’re dancing around the television celebrating a last-minute goal. Other times, you’re crying yourself to sleep over an agonizing defeat to a bitter rival.

However, there are also moments in sports that are just downright hilarious. Moments of pure comedic genius that take place before your very eyes, mostly at the expense of a player or team who suffers some sort of misfortune.

We bring to you 10 of the funniest moments from sports across the globe, so sit back and enjoy. Mind you; they might not be so funny if it involves one of your favourite teams, so brace yourself.

Have a laugh with these 10 funny sporting moments

1. Neil McKenzie gets caught with his pants down

As Australia played South Africa in an ODI, Neil McKenzie was fielding on the boundary in the 36th over. Australia had amassed a score of 3/164 when a great shot was played towards mid-wicket, and it looked to be sailing on for a four.

However, Mckenzie had other ideas as he sprinted at full pace from deep square leg to try and save the situation. As he got within a few strides of the ball, he tried to perform a diving slide on the surface to rescue a boundary for his country, only to realize the ground was a little too dry.

Rather than performing a glorious boundary saving slide, he dug right into the turf and got a face full of dirt, allowing the ball to run for a four as he was just out of arm’s reach. What makes this even funnier is that his pants fell down in the process, so as he got back up to his knees, he was left with his pants around his ankles. Priceless!

2. Carlos Boozer punches the referee in the crotch

Some of the funniest moments in sports happen when players and referees interact with one another. In this instance, the interaction was a touch unfortunate for referee Danny Crawford as he took a sucker punch to his private area from Carlos Boozer.

As Boozer celebrates scoring a post-up move against Dirk Nowitzki, he turns around and punches the air in celebration, completely unaware of the referee right behind him. What unfolds after is one of the finest low blows you will ever see outside of the boxing ring.

Bizarrely, Crawford walked away as if nothing happened and didn’t even flinch. Talk about balls of steel.

3. Gary Linekar soils himself on the pitch

An unfortunate moment for England legend Gary Linekar, as he has somewhat of a mishap in the first game of the Italia 90 World Cup. The pressure on the England players was immense going into the tournament. They were heavily tipped to go on a deep run as they had one of the best squads around at the time.

However, the pleasure was all a bit too much for Linekar, as he explains:

“I had a bit of a dickie stomach. I don’t know where it came from. I managed to get through the first half despite terrible stomach cramps. You know, it’s a World Cup, you cannot say ‘Excuse me, ref, is it alright if I pop off for five minutes?’

“Anyway, the ball went, and I kind of went for it, but I stumbled a little bit. And as I stumbled, I… relaxed. I remember Gary Stevens coming up to me, and he’s looking over me, saying, ‘are you alright?’ And I just remember saying: ‘I’ve s*** myself?’ What do you do?”.

When you gotta go, you gotta go.

4. Steve McCarthy vs. Tony Wilson – Mum steps in!

Here’s a bizarre boxing moment for you. In the September 1989 clash between Steve McCarthy and Tony Wilson, things got a little bit weird as the fight resembled more of a WWE match than a professional boxing bout.

It seemed McCarthy was getting the better of Wilson as he knocked him down in the third round, only to continue dominating the match as he was pummeling Wilson, who was up against the ropes. It looked as if the fight could be stopped at any moment, but before the referee had the chance, Wilson’s mum rushed into the ring and started beating McCarthy over the head with her high heeled shoe.

Understandably, McCarthy left the ring as he thought he had won, but the ref decided that the fight should continue. McCarthy refused as he had a large gash from the mother’s attack that later required four stitches. Due to his refusal to fight, Wilson was declared the winner by a TKO. You simply couldn’t write it.

5. Goalkeeper celebrates too soon after penalty miss

If you take away one thing from this sporting blunder, it’s that you should never celebrate too early. It’s a solid life lesson that needs to be learned from a young age. However, it seems the Goalkeeper for Bangkok Sports Club didn’t get the memo.

After the game ended as a draw, it went to penalties to decide the result. After an intense penalty shootout, it all came down to the last kick. If Satri Angthong missed their penalty, they would lose the game, and Bangkok would win.

The player steps up and smashes the ball right onto the crossbar, and it sailed up into the air. The goalie then ran off in celebration, absolutely elated that his team had won the match. However, the ball comes back down from the heavens with a ton of backspin on it, bounces about 18 yards out, and then slowly makes it way back to the goal line.

By the time the goalie realizes, he’s too far away from the goal to get back, and his celebrations quickly turn to tears in a matter of seconds. Disaster!

6. Usain Bolt gets ran over by a guy on a segway

Usain Bolt is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest athlete to ever walk the earth. The guy has the insane accolade of being the fastest man on the planet. Now just imagine how expensive his legs are. Some reports claim his legs are worth around the $200 million mark, which surely makes them the most expensive pair of legs around.

Now transport yourself to The 2015 World Championships in Athletics, Beijing. Bolt had just defeated his long time rival Justin Gatlin in the 200m to secure the sprint double. As Bolt was doing his victory lap, a Chinese cameraman was following closely behind Bolt on a segway. He was trying to get as close as possible to the sprinter to get the perfect shot, but unfortunately, he lost control of the contraption as the left wheel caught the metal barrier next to him.

The cameraman totally lost control, and the segway veered straight towards Bolt and knocked him right off his feet. If you haven’t seen it, it’s really worth checking out the video. The guy hits Bolt with a great deal of force and sends him flying, and to be honest, it’s a miracle he wasn’t injured.

The whole thing happens in a blink of an eye, but in true Bolt fashion, he does a backward roll, gets himself up, and limps away with a big smile on his face. It seems like the segway driver came off worse than Bolt. He looked like he had no clue where he was as he lay on the floor, wondering whether or not he had just killed the most famous guy in the stadium.

7. Nick Kyrgios forgets his shoes

The mercurial tennis star Nick Kyrgios could easily have claimed at least half of the places in this list by himself. However, this one takes the cake.

In his 2018 match against Denis Kudla at The Cincinnati Masters, Kudla was ready and waiting for Nick to start the match but was left scratching his head on the court as Nick frantically searched through his bag.

After quite some time, Kyrgios stood up and announced to the umpire that he forgot to bring his shoes! It’s probably the first and only time in history a professional tennis player has forgotten their tennis shoes. He then had to stand on the court in his socks as he waited for a ball boy to bring them to him, all the while hundreds of tennis fans watched on from the stands.

8. Iran’s Milad Mohammadi Acrobatic Throw In Fail Vs. Spain

A classic moment from the 2018 World Cup as Spain, they managed to just scrape by with a 1-0 win over Iran. It was the 2nd group stage game in group B, and Iran had their tails up after they won their first game against Morocco, giving them chances of escaping what some called the group of death.

However, the stand out moment from this match wasn’t to be on the pitch, but rather just off it as one of Iran’s players made one of the most comical throw-in attempts you have ever seen.

In the last few minutes of the game, Iran was desperate to grab an equalizer as the ball went out for a throw-in deep in Spain’s half. In an attempt to launch the ball into Spain’s box, Iran’s Milad Mohammadi tried a front forward somersault throw but bailed on it at the last minute, which confused almost everyone in the stadium. The best part was how he kisses the ball, looks to the sky and has the most intense look of focus for a meagre throw-in. Hilarious.

It was an audacious idea and would have been spectacular if it led to a goal, but unfortunately
for Milad, it became one of the funniest moments of the World Cup that year.

9. Alistair Cook takes one in the crown jewels

One of those moments that either makes you cry with laughter or wince uncontrollably at the thought of the pain this one must have caused.

In the 2005 Ashes in Cardiff, Cook was in the slips as a fastball was bowled to Steve Smith. Smith edges the ball towards Cook, and it bounces just short, preventing him from making a clean catch.

Unfortunately for Cook, he completely misjudges the flight of the ball only for it to hit him right in the “unmentionables.’ Just bear in mind, Jimmy Anderson was bowling at around 140kmph that day. Ouch.

This whole scene is only made quite so funny as Joe Root is clearly in stitches as he tries to “help” his teammate who is lying in the ground right next to him. Some school boy humor for you right there, and quite possibly one of the worst cases of ball-tampering cricket has ever seen!

10. Chris Brass scores the funniest own goal ever

Last but not least, we have an unbelievable own goal to finish off our list, and what a howler it is.

In a League Two match between Bury and Darlington, Brass attempted an acrobatic overhead kick to try and clear the danger from his box. As the ball was chipped towards him, Brass swung his leg at the ball, hoping it would find its way out of the danger area, but instead, he smashed the ball into his face, which then ricocheted into his own goal.

It was an absolutely hilarious bit of defending, and it’s quite possibly the worst own goal ever scored on live television. You can’t help but feel sorry for Brass as this looks like it hurt in more ways than one, but you have to admit, it’s a classic sporting moment that won’t be forgotten any time soon.
