Healthy energy drinks and how to find them

Energy drinks have become increasingly popular in recent years and many people consume them with the belief that they will help boost energy! However, new research shows that they are not as good for you as you are led to believe. To help you stay on track with your new healthy lifestyle we have gathered some healthy energy drinks to replace the Red Bull or similar you usually drink.

Find healthy energy drinks, cause energy drinks aren’t that healthy

Energy drinks may give you a boost when Monday morning hits you hard. But beyond that initial pick me up, the red, blue or green coloured beverage may not be doing as much for your body as you think.

What you might not know is that energy drinks can contain high levels of caffeine or ingredients containing caffeine, and depending on how much you consume, it can affect you and your health in different ways.

Small amounts of caffeine may have the following effects:

  • You feel more awake
  • Your heart beats faster
  • You urinate more
  • Your body temperature rises
  • Your digestive system produces more acid.

There are more health impacts of caffeine besides what we’ve listed here which is why we advocate for finding a healthy energy alternative.

Besides caffeine, energy drinks also contain immense amounts of sugar and other stimulants. A diet high in sugar has many negative effects on health. Some of these include:

  • Dental cavities
  • Weight gain and obesity
  • An increase in heart disease risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and inflammation
  • Has been shown to be linked to acne

An energy drink has a counter effect on weight loss and health in general as it is high in calories. It may be appealing in that it is said to give you that quick boost of energy, but there is no magic bullet for strength and endurance. True energy comes from a healthy diet rich in whole foods but if you’re looking for a fast boost there are healthy energy drinks you can choose from rather than these sugar-filled ones.

“Red Bull gives you wings”, “The massive hit that improves you a bit” and “Feel the thrill”. Exciting things for a drink to promise.

Sound too good to be true? That’s because it is. Not only are energy drinks packed full of sugar, caffeine and synthetic ingredients, but their promised buzz will also send you crashing once your body has begun breaking it down. And then you’ll need another one, right? And if these drinks have a negative effect on our health as adults, how are they affecting our children?

At the end of the day, energy drinks are big business.

In 2017, NSW Poisons Information Centre received 56 calls regarding energy drinks, 71 per cent of those about children. Jared Brown, head of the centre reported that “symptoms range from vomiting to people being very agitated with their heart racing. Then there are those who get more significant toxicity with chest pains similar to a mild heart attack, and people with severe agitation to the point of needing some sedation, and rarely people have seizures as well. In the last five years, 25 per cent were hospitalised.”

In a report published by the Food Research Collaboration, a review of worldwide evidence on energy drinks links them to headaches, stomach aches and sleep problems, while emergency department visits associated with their consumption in the US doubled between 2007 and 2011.

5 HEALTHY energy drinks to help you feel ENERGISED!

Caffeine is complex, while it’s a stimulant that increases alertness, it can also make you feel tired at times. In fact, it’s not uncommon to have a ‘caffeine crash’ after consuming too much of it. When it comes to energy drinks they not only have caffeine but also often have other legal stimulants like ephedrine, guarana, and ginseng which is why finding alternative healthy energy drinks will help you maintain your healthy eating plan whilst also giving you a boost.
