Born in New York, Lenny Kravitz is a Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and musician who has love music from a young age. His father worked as a producer at the US network NBC, and his mother was an actress most notably on The Jeffersons, a television sitcom. The family relocated to LA when Kravitz’s was about 10 so that his mum could take the role on The Jeffersons. His father was also a jazz promoter which led to young Lenny being exposed to artists such as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Al Green and more Motown or soul artists that in the end have influenced his musical style.

Kravitz developed a passion for music at an early age which led him to join the California Boys Choir. His interest in using various musical instruments helped him get admitted to the music program at Beverly Hills High School, with classmates that included Nicholas Cage and Slash. LA was where Lenny discovered rock n roll, his other major musical influence, from bands such as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and more. After graduation, he left his home and tried to pursue his dreams in the music business where he was adamant to make it on his own merit rather than using his parent’s notoriety or clout.

In the early years of Kravitz’s music career were, like most struggling artists, not pleasing at all, he was suffering financially and lived out of a car that he rented for a few dollars a day. In 1985, as he struggled to make progress in his music career, his parents divorced which had a huge emotional impact on him.  In 1986, he moved back to his birthplace, New York, where he met actress Lisa Bonet when she was staring in the Cosby Show. Kravitz and Bonet fell in love, moved in together, and eloped to Vegas.

1989 was set to be a massive year for the couple with Virgin Records releasing Kravitz’s debut album and the birth of their baby girl Zoe. Kravitz’s first album, Let Love Rule, reached number 61 on the US Billboard charts but it wasn’t until Madonna covered his song in 1990 that he found the popularity that would properly launch his career. Unfortunately, as Kravitz’s career started soaring his marriage became complicated and he separated from Bonet in 1991 with the couple finalising their amicable divorce in 1993.

Inspired by his painful breakup Kravitz produced the album, Mama Said, in 1991 and finally saw him break into the Top 40 on the Billboard charts. The breakup also helped inspire Kravitz to get and stay fit and healthy.
