Before he sold grills George Foreman was one of the world’s best boxers

When it comes to sporting comebacks, they don’t come much bigger than the one made by boxing legend George Foreman. Big George regained the world heavyweight title at age 45, 21 years after he’d first won the belt and after he’d had a 10-year layoff!

Foreman was a KO specialist. He won a gold medal as an amateur at the Mexico Olympics in 1968, knocking out his Soviet Union opponent in the final. He turned pro the next year, racking up KO after KO for the next three and a half years to earn a shot at legendary world champion ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier. He knocked Frazier down six times in a round and a half to become the new world heavyweight champion in 1973 at the age of just 24.

Foreman defended his belt twice before being knocked out by the ‘greatest of all time’, Muhammad Ali, in the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in late 1974. He didn’t get another shot at the world title before becoming a born-again Christian in 1977. Foreman retired from the ring and became an ordained minister. He was a full-time preacher for the next ten years.

The comeback

In 1987, he announced a comeback at the age of 38, an age when most boxers are well past their prime. He certainly wasn’t in shape at the time. One of his main motivations to return to the ring was to raise money for a youth centre he had created during his time as a preacher.

Slowly but surely, Foreman got in better shape and started racking up KO victories again. His punching power was still there. He won 24 out of 24 fights over the next four years before challenging Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield for the world heavyweight title in 1991. Holyfield was in his prime at 28, and Foreman was 42. Big George surprised many by going the distance but ultimately lost a unanimous 12-round decision.

Undeterred, Foreman pushed on and won three more fights over the next two years to earn a shot at 24-year-old Tommy ‘The Duke’ Morrison for his world heavyweight title in 1993. Foreman was 44. He again came up short, losing a 12-round decision.

The fairy tale

But nearly 18 months later, the comeback had its fairy-tale ending when Foreman faced the unbeaten Michael Moorer in Las Vegas. Moorer was 26 and had beaten Holyfield earlier in the year to win his belt. He was the red hot favourite to retain it against the 45-year-old Foreman.

Big George entered the ring wearing the same red boxing trunks that he’d worn against Ali in their famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ bout twenty years earlier. Moorer was winning on all three judge’s scorecards when the fight entered Round 10 of the scheduled 12 rounds.

That’s when the miracle happened. Foreman landed a big right hand that stunned Moorer and the boxing world. Moorer didn’t beat the count, and Foreman was once again the world heavyweight champ! He became the oldest fighter ever to win a world title, cementing his legacy forever.
