Foods to help fight Depression

Being depressed or stressed is common these days due to lots of different reasons. It could be a hectic schedule, personal issues, certain medications, or for unknown reasons. It is however clear that many men in different stages of their life struggle with depression.

Depression and stress can cause a  lack of interest in things, oversleeping, overeating, spending more time alone, and losing interest in most activities. Depression is something that you can get help for and it’s important to have good nutrition, exercise, spend time with loved ones and discuss personal issue or concerns.

Whatever your dietary preferences, there are a variety of foods that are a good option to lift up your mood. Let’s dive into the macros and foods that we can incorporate in our diet to help fight the symptoms of depression.

Choose to Eat Smart Carbs

Carbohydrates can lift up your mood, as they release energy in the body. Satisfying your craving can also help to improve your mood and give you a better feeling but choose your carbs wisely. Limit sugary foods and opt for smart or “complex” carbs (such as whole grains) rather than simple carbs (such as cakes and cookies). Fruits, vegetables, and legumes also have healthy carbs and fibre.

Satisfy your Daily Protein Goals with Protein-Rich Foods

Foods that are rich in protein, boost your ability to focus, alertness and gives you the energy to stay more active. Add protein-rich food with your every meal like salmon, beans, peas, poultry, lean beef, milk, eggs, greek yogurt, cottage cheese.

Snack on Nuts

Snacking on nuts like cashews, brazil nuts, hazelnuts could be very beneficial for you to fight depression. Therefore, the best one would be walnuts as they are one of the richest plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. It has been shown that omega-3 fatty acids support brain function and reduce depression symptoms.

Getting the right Nutrition

How you feed the body has a huge impact on your internal and external life. If you feed yourself with healthy foods, your body stays at its best shape and functions properly. However, many people who are very depressed often change their eating habits and start eating junk and processed foods which instead can have a negative effect on their quality of life and could even lead to a serious illness.

Food plays a significant role in our emotional health, mental and physical health. When you’re struggling with depression it’s not always easy to eat the right foods but even if you make slight changes to your diet it could benefit you, in the long run, to deal with depression symptoms.
